Artist Statement

My name is Aisha Nailah, born and raised in Bridgeport, Ct., currently a Reads Artspace member and resident. I hold a bachelor's in art therapy and I'm a certified special education teacher and teaching artist since 2010. I work in mixed media painting, collage and murals. My work expresses my love of color and texture, often working fabrics, and paper into pieces as well as using paint and inks. It's about the feeling, color and spiritual vibrancy of the composition. I'm inspired culturally being an African Diasporan woman of Costa Rican descent and by street art, especially the free forms and colors found in the styles and calligraphic movements and as a teacher I tend to focus on exposing students to artists in the African Diaspora. Since stepping into the arts in 2010 I've curated multiple large scale exhibits at Reads Artspace, exhibited nationally and internationally and I've also served as a curator at BLENDS gallery in Bridgeport from 2017-2019. I teach collage, painting in my own Urban Abstract Figurative style, the basic elements of arts & design and found object/ assemblage art.
