Thresholds Opening Reception at Yellow Studio

Cross River, NY: The Gallery at Yellow Studio is pleased to present “Thresholds,” a thought-provoking exhibition featuring sculptural works by Kate Rusek and paintings by Monica Shulman. This show delves into the fascinating realm of liminal spaces, exploring the transformative power of art and the beauty found in moments of transition. The exhibition runs from October 19 to November 15, with an opening reception on Saturday, October 19, from 4 to 6pm.

In “Thresholds,” Rusek and Shulman guide viewers through the intriguing spaces between defined states, where change and growth occur. Rusek’s ceramic forms capture absence as a tangible object to touch and feel. Shulman’s layered paintings capture the essence of liminal experiences, visual diaries that mark the artist’s journey through life’s transitions. Both artists embrace the creative potential in uncertain, in-between spaces: Rusek’s work embodies the threshold between material histories and imagined futures, while Shulman’s canvases capture fleeting moments between the past and the future.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Kate Rusek assembles highly tactile sculptures, textiles, and installations emphasizing craft and materiality. Rusek transforms discarded materials into rich, intricate forms and vibrant nature-inspired pieces that prompt us to rethink our relationship with materials and the value we assign to them in our daily lives. Rusek received dual B.F.As from The University of Miami and an M.A from Savannah College of Art and Design. She has been awarded numerous residencies and fellowships, including the Devra Freelander Fellowship at Socrates Sculpture Park. Rusek’s work has been exhibited widely in New York, Los Angeles, and across the Pacific Northwest. For more information, visit @thekaterusek on Instagram.

Monica Shulman is a New York-based artist whose gestural abstractions serve as a form of storytelling. Rooted in abstract expressionism, Shulman creates sculptural surfaces through heavily layered impasto techniques, exhibiting a dynamic tension between reckless abandon and careful restraint. A first-generation American with strong ties to her Cuban and Argentine roots, Shulman left a career in law to pursue art full-time. Her work has been featured in various publications and exhibited at prestigious venues, including the American Academy of Arts and Letters and Frieze Los Angeles.
