New Exhibition at ArtsWestchester Looks Back at 50 Years in Westchester With Photographs
September 30, 2015 (White Plains, NY) – In its new photographic exhibition, ArtsWestchester looks back at the past 50 years in Westchester County by featuring milestones and memories from the county’s past half-century. “Through the Decades: Picturing 50 Years in Westchester” will feature both archival and crowd-sourced photographs: in celebration of its 50th anniversary, the organization reached out to the community by asking residents to submit photographs, some of which are displayed in the exhibition.Through the Decades will be on view from October 6 through November 21 in ArtsWestchester’s gallery in downtown White Plains. An opening reception will take place on October 4, from 4-6pm. For more information, visit: artsw.org/decades.Moments preserved in time by more than 30 photographers include visits from Pope Benedict XVI and President Barack Obama, a poignant look back at Hurricane Sandy, the legalization of same-sex marriage, as well as dozens of other significant milestones.
Throughout the past 50 years, cities have gained skyscrapers, neighborhoods have welcomed famous residents, storms have changed our landscape and the arts have grown brighter. Janet T. Langsam, CEO of ArtsWestchester explains: “It’s fitting that we recall these moments on the 50th anniversary of ArtsWestchester. As we ready ourselves for the next half-century, we pause to reflect on how far our county has travelled and we envision where we might go together in the future.”
Exhibition Juror John O’Donnell adds, “So much has happened since 1965, and a lot has changed. This photographic exhibition looks back at the decades since then and lets us reminisce.”
Guests are asked to bring their own memories with them when they visit the exhibition: A “cork board wall” encourages visitors to pin up their favorite photographs taken in Westchester. This can include anything that fits the “50 Years in Westchester” theme. There will also be a “memory book” where visitors can share their stories with future visitors, creating a compilation of new memories shared.
