New Brief: Final Days of DMX Exhibition Include New Programs

Yonkers Arts hosts the final days of its DMX tribute exhibition with several upcoming events that lead up to a closing reception on January 20. The exhibition, titled Let Me Fly, features images and mixed-media works that celebrate the life and career of rapper DMX (Earl Simmons), who died in 2021. The title Let Me Fly is inspired by a song on the rapper’s It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot album. DMX, born in Mount Vernon, was a longtime Westchester resident, having also lived in Yonkers, Mount Kisco and White Plains throughout his life.

The exhibition, according to Yonkers Arts, tells DMX’s story through his own words via song lyrics, interview quotes and general information. Curated by Yonkers Arts Executive Director Ray Wilcox, it includes a collection of images by professional photographer Shareif Z, who is a Yonkers native, as well as contributions from Def Jam, Ruff Ryders and the Timberland company.

On Tuesday, January 16, exhibited artists will share insight on their artworks as well as their connections to the late rapper. The following day, January 17, a creative writing workshop will be led by Tom Ray. “Can I Vent” will walk participants through the process of expressing their thoughts and feelings inspired by DMX and the exhibition. On January 19, the night prior to the closing, an artist showcase event will feature an open mic. Finally, a closing reception on January 20 will provide visitors with their last chance to view the exhibited artworks.
